WHAT ARE SHOCKS AND STRUTS?

Shocks and struts are two components of a vehicle’s suspension system that dampens the effect of the springs that absorb the shocks from the surface of the road. When a shock absorber and strut assembly is worn out, the vehicle is more prone to bounce when it encounters rough road surfaces. This can have an impact on vehicle handling.

SIGNS OF WEAR AND TEAR ON SHOCKS AND STRUTS:

• Excessive vehicle bouncing and bumpy rides
• Swerving and dipping when the brakes are applied
• The vehicle sways and leans on turns or when changing lanes
• Poor steering response and excessive vibration of the steering wheel
• Uneven tire tread wear
• Fluid leakage from a strut or shock

WHEN SHOULD SHOCKS AND STRUTS BE REPLACED?

While every vehicle is different, it is generally recommended to have your shocks and struts inspected at the first sign of potential wear or at every 80,000 to 97,000 kms.

Shocks and struts should always be replaced in pairs or, better yet, all four should be replaced at the same time. After all, all four have been on the vehicle for the same number of kilometres and have undergone the same conditions. Also remember that whenever the struts are replaced, you’ll need a wheel alignment at the same time as it may have changed. Proper wheel alignment will protect your vehicle’s tires and assure maximum safety.
